Retail sales in Latvia declined in April after recording an increase in the previous month, data released by Statistics Latvia showed Thursday.
Retail sales, at constant prices, declined a seasonally adjusted 2 percent month-on-month in April, reversing the previous month's 1.4 percent increase.
The slump in trade mainly reflected a 3.9 percent fall in sales of food products, and a 0.8 percent loss in sales of non-food products. These declines were partially offset by a 2.6 percent growth in retail sales of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
Excluding automotive fuel, retail sales decreased a seasonally adjusted 2.1 percent sequentially in April, after posting a 0.8 percent gain a month earlier, the agency said.
Compared to April 2012, trade in the Latvian retail sector increased a calendar-adjusted 6.2 percent, slower than the 7.8 percent growth seen in March.
