9 Children Hospitalized After Being Overcome By Pepper Spray At School

A student at Ruben Salazar Bilingual Center in Chicago brought in pepper spray to class and discharged the repellent, disabling nine of his classmates in the process. The Chicago Tribune reports that the students were taken to the hospital by emergency workers.

One of the affected students was listed in fair condition, while five others were listed in good condition, according to NBC Chicago. Three other students were taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, fire officials said.

"This was an unfortunate accident and school officials took the appropriate steps this afternoon," said Chicago Public Schools spokesman Becky Carroll.

It wasn't clear whether one of the hospitalized students was the one who brought in the pepper spray and discharged its contents.
