12 Killed In Taliban Attack On NATO Supply Firm In Kabul

Taliban carried out a gun and bomb attack on the Kabul base of a logistics firm supplying NATO forces in Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing seven people and wounding five.

The dead were an Afghan security guard, two civilians and four Nepalese contractors.

Afghan National Security Forces killed all the five militants of the pre-dawn attack, the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The attack on the private logistic company at Dispachary area of Pul-e-Charkhi in Kabul began at 4:30 a.m. First, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive laden vehicle in front of the facility, after which four others opened fire at guards of the company. Minutes later, police special units arrived at the scene and repelled the attack after a half-an-hour long gun battle.

The Ministry in a statement "strongly condemned the inhumane act" which it said was against the values of Islam.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which handed over the lead for security across the country to domestic forces last month, said "Afghan National Security Forces took the lead and secured the scene quickly and effectively in this morning's attack," adding that "no assistance was requested from ISAF."

At a ceremony on June 18 marking the final phase of security transition in Afghanistan, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen had announced the coalition forces "will no longer plan, execute or lead combat operations (in Afghanistan)."

It was the fourth high-profile attack that the Taliban carried out in the Afghan capital within a month. The previous ones were targeting the Afghan Supreme Court, a building near the Kabul airport, and Afghan presidential palace and government buildings that were considered as one of the most secure areas of Kabul.
