Study: An Aspirin A Day May Help Prevent Ovarian Cancer

Women who use aspirin daily may run a lower risk of developing ovarian cancer, according to research conducted at the National Cancer Institute. The study, published in the journal of the National Cancer Institute, surveyed data on the symptoms and medication of 20,000 women — 8,000 with ovarian cancer and 12,000 women without.

The team found that the women who took a low dose of aspirin every day reduced their risk of ovarian cancer by 20 percent, when compared with the women who took aspirin less than once a week.

The authors added that there is no corresponding benefit linked to the use of acetaminophen, suggesting no link between non-NSAIDs and subsequent health benefits.

"Additional studies are needed to explore the delicate balance of risk-benefit for this potential chemopreventive agent, as well as studies to identify the mechanism by which aspirin may reduce ovarian cancer risk," said lead author Britton Trabert.
