Germany January Unemployment Rate Drops To 5%

Germany's unemployment rate declined in January, figures published by the Federal Statistical Office revealed Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted ILO unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent in January from 5.1 percent in December. In January last year, the jobless rate was 5.4 percent.

The number of unemployed persons in Europe's largest economy decreased to around 2.14 million from about 2.17 million at the end of 2013. Year-on-year, unemployment fell by 6.6 percent.

The statistical office further noted that the number of persons in employment stayed broadly unchanged at around 40.5 million in January. Compared to January 2013, employment increased by 1.1 percent. The employment rate remained unchanged at 64.5 percent.

On an unadjusted basis, the jobless rate was 5.5 percent in January, which was higher than December's 4.9 percent, data showed.
