Greek Unemployment Rate Climbs To 27.5% In Q4

Greece's unemployment rate increased sharply in the December quarter, after staying broadly unchanged in the third quarter, data published by the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate advanced to 27.5 percent in the fourth quarter from 27 percent in the three months to September. In the fourth quarter of 2013, the jobless rate was 26 percent.

The unemployment rate among youth, in the 15-24 age group, was 57 percent in the December quarter, lower than 57.8 percent recorded a year earlier.

The number of unemployed amounted to around 1.36 million at the end of 2013, which was higher by 1.3 percent than in the third quarter. Year-on-year, unemployment rose by 5.2 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons percent dropped 1.3 percent sequentially to around 3.59 million in the fourth quarter. Annually, employment dropped 2.5 percent, the agency said.
