Eurozone Current Account Surplus Rises In April

The euro area current account surplus increased in April due to an increase in trade surplus, data from the European Central Bank showed Friday.

The current account surplus rose to a seasonally adjusted EUR 21.5 billion from EUR 19.6 billion in March.

The surplus on trade in goods increased to EUR 16.9 billion from EUR 14.3 billion in the prior month. Likewise, the surplus on services rose to EUR 10 billion from EUR 8.7 billion.

Meanwhile, income fell to EUR 5.3 billion from EUR 6 billion and the deficit on current transfers widened to EUR 10.6 billion from EUR 9.5 billion.

On an unadjusted basis, the current account surplus totaled EUR 15.7 billion compared to March's EUR 19.3 billion. In the financial account, combined direct and portfolio investment recorded net outflows of EUR 107 billion in April, the report showed.
