Japan EcoWatchers' Index Improves In July; Exceeds Forecast

Japan's economy watchers' assessment of current conditions improved notably in July, while their expectations weakened further, survey data from the Cabinet Office showed Friday.

The current conditions index rose by 3.6 points to 51.3 in July from 47.7 in the previous month. Economists had forecast a score of 48.5 for the month. It was the third consecutive month of increase.

Meanwhile, the expectations index dropped to 51.5 in July from 53.3 in the previous month. It was the second consecutive decline.

"Today's Economy Watchers Survey showed that conditions continued to improve in July," Marcel Thieliant, Capital Economics Japan Economist in Singapore said.

"Unfortunately, it also suggests that the recovery is unlikely to accelerate much further in coming months."
