Japan Tertiary Industry Index Falls Unexpectedly In June

An index measuring activity among tertiary industries in Japan declined unexpectedly in June, a report from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed Monday.

The tertiary activity index slid by a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent month-over-month in June, partially reversing the 0.9 percent rise in May. Economists had expected the index to remain unchanged over the month.

Activity in the accommodations, eating and drinking services industry declined the most, by 2.4 percent in June. Activity in the living-related and personal services and amusement services industry fell 2 percent and activity in the wholesale and retail trade industry dropped 1.9 percent.

Meanwhile, activity in the scientific research, professional and technical services industry improved in June.
