Consumer confidence in Japan decreased unexpectedly in August, data from the Cabinet Office showed Tuesday.
The consumer confidence index fell to 41.2 in August from 41.5 in July. Economists had expected the index to rise to 42.3.
Three of the four major sub-indices decreased in August. The index measuring income growth fell 0.6 points over the month to 38.5 and the index measuring employment levels dropped 0.9 points to 47.8. The 'willingness to buy durable goods' index also slid to 39.5 from 39.6 in July.
Meanwhile, the index measuring overall livelihood rose 0.6 points over the month to 39.1.
