General Motors Co. (GM) is recalling 221,558 Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala sedans, citing risk of fires due to a defect in the parking brake. The recall covers 205,309 vehicles in the U.S. and the remaining 16,249 vehicles in Canada and other countries.
In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA, GM said it is recalling Cadillac XTS vehicles of model years 2013 to 2015, manufactured February 14, 2012 to August 22, 2014, and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles of model years 2014 and 2015, manufactured between January 15, 2013 and August 22, 2014.
GM noted that in the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract after use. This may cause the brake pads to stay partially engaged with the rotors and cause excessive brake heat that may result in a fire.
GM will notify owners about the recall and its dealers will update the electronic parking brake software, free of charge. The company expects to begin the recall in September 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service or Cadillac customer service.
GM closed Friday's trading at $33.94, down $0.09 or 0.26 percent on a volume of 14.52 million shares.
