South Korea Unemployment Rate Rises Unexpectedly In January

South Korea's unemployment rate decreased unexpectedly in January, figures from Statistics Korea showed Wednesday.

The jobless rate came in at seasonally adjusted 3.4 percent in January, slightly less than the 3.5 percent in the previous month. The rate was expected to remain unchanged at 3.5 percent.

On an unadjusted basis, the unemployment rate climbed to 3.8 percent in January from 3.4 percent in December.

The number of unemployed persons increased to 988,000 in January from 886,000 in the prior month. At the same time, the number of employed persons totaled 25.11 million, down from 25.38 million a month ago.
