The seventh-leg of round-the-world flight of Solar Impulse 2, an experimental airplane solely powered by solar energy, has been postponed due to bad weather.
The solar-powered aircraft was scheduled to leave Nanjing, China, for its long flight over the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. However, the flight had to be canceled after bad weather was reported over the Pacific Ocean that could have affected the recharging capability of batteries.
The Impulse has flown a total of 3,728.2 miles in six stages since its maiden trip from Abu Dhabi on March 9.
Solar Impulse 2 is a single-seater aircraft made of carbon fiber and has a 72 meter wingspan with a weight of just 2,300 kg. The 17,000 solar cells built into the wing supply four electric motors with renewable energy.
During the day, the solar cells recharge lithium batteries weighing 633 Kg, which allow the aircraft to fly at night and therefore have virtually unlimited autonomy.
