New Zealand Local Authorities Deficit Widens In Q1

New Zealand local authorities had a wider operating deficit in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, a report released by Statistics New Zealand showed Monday.

Operating deficit, excluding non-operating items, widened to a seasonally adjusted NZ$196.14 million from NZ$89.7 million in the previous quarter. In the first quarter of 2014, the deficit was NZ$159.76 million.

Operating expenditure of local authorities rose a seasonally adjusted 4.3 percent in the first quarter, helped by purchases of goods and services.

Operating income from core services declined 0.5 percent to NZ$2.1 billion in the first quarter, after the 3 percent increase in the preceding quarter.
