The number of persons in employment in Germany increased further in the second quarter, but at a slower pace, preliminary figures from Destatis showed Tuesday.
Total number of employed persons in the country rose 0.4 percent, or by 175,700 persons to 42.8 million in the second quarter from the corresponding period last year. This was lower than the 0.6 percent hike logged in the first quarter.
The latest rate of growth was the weakest since the second quarter last year, when it climbed only 1.0 percent.
In the three months ended June, the increase in the number of employed persons was mainly due to the growth in the service sector. Within the service sector, business services recorded a spike of 2.0 percent, followed by public services, education and health by 0.9 percent.
On a quarterly basis, the number of persons in employment went up 0.9 percent, or by 373,000 in the second quarter. However, this increase was lower than the average development in the second quarter of a year recorded over the last five years, the agency said.
The average number of hours worked per person in employment rose 0.6 percent to 13.8 billion hours in the June quarter from the respective period of the prior year.
