New Zealand Home Sales, Prices Climb In January: REINZ

New Zealand's overall home sales and house prices increased at the start of the year from a year ago, figures from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand showed Thursday.

Total dwellings sold in January grew 4.3 percent year-over-year to 5,048. At the same time, sales plunged 31.0 percent from the preceding month.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of dwelling sold rose by 9.7 percent compared to January 2015, and fell 5.1 percent compared to December.

All regions recorded a decline in sales volumes compared to December, which is typical in January due to Christmas/New Year and the summer holiday break, the agency said.

On the price front, house prices climbed 5.2 percent annually in January, while it dipped 3.7 percent from a month earlier.

Excluding the Auckland region, the national median price rose 5.9 percent in January from a year ago.
