Italy Inflation Accelerates As Estimated In January

Italy's consumer price inflation accelerated as initially estimated at the beginning of the year, final figures from the statistical office Istat showed Monday.

The consumer price index rose 0.3 percent year-over-year in January, confirming the flash data, following a 0.1 percent increase in December.

The slight increase in inflation was mainly due to the easing of the decline in non-regulated energy prices. It fell at a slower pace 5.9 percent in January from a year ago, following a 8.7 percent slump in the preceding month.

At the same time, core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, quickened to 0.8 percent in January from 0.6 percent a month earlier.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged down 0.2 percent in January, in line with the preliminary report.

The EU measure of inflation, or HICP, climbed 0.4 percent yearly in January, faster than the 0.1 percent rise in the prior month. Month-on-month, the HICP dropped 2.2 percent. Both these figures matched with the flash data.
