The total value of building work in New Zealand was up a seasonally adjusted 6.3 percent on quarter in the first three months of 2016, Statistics New Zealand said on Friday.
That beat forecasts for an increase of 1.0 percent following the upwardly revised 2.8 percent jump in the previous three months (originally 2.5 percent).
The volume of building activity climbed 5.3 percent on quarter, with rises of 5.5 percent for residential buildings and 5.0 percent for non-residential buildings.
