S. Africa Jun Money Supply Growth Slows Unexpectedly

South Africa's money supply growth eased unexpectedly in June, figures from the South African Reserve Bank showed Friday.

The broad money supply, or M3, climbed at a slower pace of 5.88 percent year-over-year in June, following a 6.41 percent rise in the previous month.

Meanwhile, economists had expected the growth to accelerate to 7.65 percent.

Similarly, the annual growth in the narrow measure, M1, moderated to 9.49 percent in June from 10.02 percent a month ago.

The intermediate money supply, or M2, also increased at a slower pace of 4.61 percent yearly in June, after a 5.45 percent hike in the preceding month.

Data also showed that private sector credit in the domestic economy grew 7.3 percent annually in June, faster than May's 6.6 percent climb. The expected rate of increase for the month was 7.1 percent.
