South Africa's consumer price inflation accelerated marginally in May, in line with expectations, figures from Statistics South Africa showed Wednesday.
The consumer price index climbed 5.4 percent year-over-year in May, just above the 5.3 percent rise in April, which was the lowest inflation since December 2015. The figure also matched consensus estimate.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 6.9 percent annually in May and transport costs rose by 5.2 percent.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent in May, slightly faster than the 0.2 percent increase economists had forecast.
