Taiwan's Trade Surplus Exceeds Expectations

Taiwan's trade surplus increased more than expected in September, data from the Ministry of Finance revealed Wednesday.

The trade surplus increased to $6.69 billion in September from $5.71 billion in August. The expected level was $5.92 billion.

Exports surged 28.1 percent year-on-year to a record $28.9 billion. Shipments were forecast to climb 13.4 percent after rising 12.7 percent in August.

Likewise, annual growth in imports advanced to 22.2 percent from 6.9 percent. Economists had forecast a moderate growth of 8.2 percent increase.

On a monthly basis, exports grew 4.1 percent and imports by 0.7 percent in September.
