The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service or FSIS has issued a public health alert against certain raw beef product sold at select Aldi stores citing possible contamination with extraneous material, specifically soft, clear plastic.
A recall was not requested as the product is no longer available for purchase.
Cargill Meat Solutions' USDA Choice Black Angus Beef From Aldi, Beef For Carne Picada were produced on July 25. The affected products were available in around 1.5-lb. plastic tray packages with a "Use or Freeze by" date of August 22, 2023 in select ALDI grocery stores nationwide.
The product bears the establishment number Est. 85M on the back label.
The warning has been issued after the company notified the agency about a complaint from a retail store that soft, clear plastic was noticed in the product.
However, the company has not received any reports of injury or illness due to consumption of this product to date.
Over concerns that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers, the FSIS urged them to throw away the impacted product or return to the place of purchase.
In similar incidents, the FSIS in mid July warned against Never Any! brand ready-to-eat or RTE ham and cheese lunch kits containing chocolate chip cookies citing misbranding and the possible presence of undeclared peanut, a known allergen.
In May, FSIS issued a public health alert against frozen ready-to-cook meatloaf entrée products due to misbranding and undeclared milk, a known allergen.
