Lipocine Inc. (LPCN), a biopharmaceutical company, Thursday announced positive data from the Phase 1 study of oral brexanolone, a proprietary bioidentical neuroactive steroid (NAS) being developed for the treatment of post-partum depression (PPD). The company's shares were up more than 6 percent in pre-market.
The study evaluated quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) spectral power changes after administration of oral brexanolone in healthy postmenopausal females. The results indicated robust central nervous system (CNS) activity of oral brexanolone, with concentration- and time-dependent post-dose changes in qEEG.
"These results confirm GABAA positive allosteric modulation and support future development of oral brexanolone in neuropsychiatric indications," the company said in statement. GABAA, or gamma-Aminobutyric acid type A, is a receptor in the central nervous system that plays a key role in regulating neuronal inhibition.
Lipocine stock had closed at $5.17, down 2.45 percent on Wednesday. It has traded in the range of $2.31 - $11.79 in the last 1 year.
