Nanobiotix S.A. (NBTX), a biotechnology company focused on nanoparticle-based cancer treatments, announced on Tuesday, that the first patient has been dosed in the CONVERGE study, a Phase 2 randomized clinical trial evaluating JNJ-1900, also referred to as NBTXR3, for Stage 3 unresectable non-small cell lung cancer or NSCLC.
The CONVERGE study, sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, a Johnson & Johnson company (JNJ), aims to evaluate JNJ-1900, a first-in-class radioenhancer composed of functionalized hafnium oxide nanoparticles.
The treatment is designed to enhance the effects of radiotherapy, potentially improving tumor cell death and triggering an adaptive immune response in patients with NSCLC undergoing standard chemoradiation followed by consolidation durvalumab.
NBTXR3 is a novel, potentially first-in-class oncology product composed of functionalized hafnium oxide nanoparticles that is administered via one-time intratumoral injection and activated by radiotherapy and it has already shown promising results in other cancer types, including soft tissue sarcomas, and is being investigated across multiple solid tumors.
The company believes the product's mechanism of action could make it scalable for a wide range of solid tumors treated with radiotherapy, particularly when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors.
The study is part of Nanobiotix's broader development strategy, which includes a global Phase 3 trial in head and neck cancer and a collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center for further clinical trials.
The dosing of the first patient in the CONVERGE study marks a significant step in advancing NBTXR3's potential in NSCLC treatment.
