Historic Approval: FDA Approves First Drug To Treat Hyperphagia In Prader-Willi Syndrome

Shares of Soleno Therapeutics Inc. (SLNO) were up over 30% at $65.50 in after-hours trading yesterday, as the company's diazoxide choline, previously referred to as DCCR, makes history as the first FDA-approved therapy to treat hyperphagia in individuals 4 years of age and older with Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a range of challenging symptoms, with hyperphagia or excessive hunger, being the hallmark symptom. It is also associated with behavioral problems, cognitive disabilities, low muscle tone, short stature (when not treated with growth hormone), the accumulation of excess body fat, developmental delays, and incomplete sexual development. Around 300,000 to 400,000 people worldwide are affected by Prader-Willi syndrome. People with PWS typically have a shorter life expectancy.
