Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, or HNSCC in short, accounts for roughly 4% of all cancers in the United States. It is the sixth leading cancer worldwide, according to the National Cancer Institute. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a recognized risk factor for the development of head and neck cancers. The majority of HPV-associated head and neck cancers are caused by HPV16, a high-risk strain of the virus. HPV16-positivity is reported to result in poor treatment outcomes and poor survival. There remains a significant unmet need in HPV16-positive HNSCC.
