Discord is preparing to roll out mandatory age verification worldwide as part of a broader push to strengthen protections for younger users on the platform.
Beginning in early March, all accounts will default to a teen-level designation, limiting access to age-restricted content and applying tighter communication and content filters. Users who want full adult access will be required to verify their age, either through a facial age scan, government-issued identification, or, in some cases, both.
The company said users will be able to choose between facial age estimation and ID submission through approved third-party partners, with additional options expected later. Discord is also introducing a background age-inference system designed to assess whether an account likely belongs to an adult, reducing the need for repeated verification in some cases. However, users may still be asked to complete multiple checks if the system needs more certainty.
The move reflects growing regulatory pressure on digital platforms to restrict adult content from minors and ensure age-appropriate experiences. Discord said the updated framework is intended to clearly separate adult and teen users while preserving access to core features based on verified age groups.
Addressing privacy concerns, Discord emphasized that facial age scans are processed directly on a user's device and are not uploaded to servers. Identity documents submitted for verification will be deleted quickly, often immediately after age confirmation. Once verified, most users will not need to repeat the process unless further checks are required.
The company acknowledged past scrutiny over third-party data handling and said the new system is designed to offer stronger safeguards while meeting global expectations around online age verification.
