The biographical film about Michael Jackson moonwalked to the strongest biopic opening in box office history, surpassing Oppenheimer.
Michael made its debut to global audiences in significant numbers at AMC Entertainment's theaters across the U.S. and internationally last week.
Media reported $97 million domestic earning and $217 million global earning in its opening weekend, along with continued strong holdovers. More than 4 million moviegoers attended films at AMC locations in the United States and at ODEON Cinemas internationally from Wednesday, April 22, through Sunday, April 26.
These reported opening numbers for Michael include Friday through Sunday attendance figures, along with its Wednesday and Thursday preview screenings.
The success of Michael is the latest in a string of major openings in 2026, following recent especially strong performances from Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Michael, the biographical film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, was released in U.S. theaters on April 24. It follows the life of the king of pop, covering his involvement in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the Bad tour in the late 1980s. Jackson is portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson and as a child by Juliano Krue Valdi, both in their film debuts.
