Singer-songwriter and pianist Tori Amos has released her new studio album, In Times of Dragons, via Universal/Fontana.
In Times of Dragons is Amos' eighteenth studio album. At the center of In Times of Dragons is a fictionalized version of Amos who finds herself trapped in a marriage to a dangerous billionaire before embarking on a journey across America, encountering allies and adversaries as she searches for freedom.
"This is a metaphorical story about the fight for democracy over tyranny" Amos explains. "We really don't know how this American experiment of democracy is going to end up. I'm a pragmatist. I'm not an optimist. I'm not a fatalist. But as a songwriter I needed to hear the clarion call and just say" - to quote her beloved 1994 song "Cornflake Girl" - "this is not really happening? You bet your life it is."
The album's title track "In Times of Dragons" marks the moment she leaves that life behind and begins her journey. Reflecting on the daughter she's been separated from and the world she's fleeing, the song captures the shock, uncertainty and determination of that first step into the unknown.
