Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and swelling of the tissues around and behind the eyes. Its common symptoms include dry eyes, redness, pain, light sensitivity, eyelid retraction, bulging eyes (proptosis), double vision, and, in severe cases, vision loss. An estimated 190 thousand people in the US alone have moderate to severe TED.

Most often, TED occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive. Around 85% of people with TED also have Graves' disease, a different condition. Because of this close link, TED is also known as Graves' eye disease, Graves' ophthalmopathy, or Graves' orbitopathy.
