During a chat with Zachary Hourihane (also know as the Swiftologist) on his podcast "Proto Pop," Lizzo, reflected on the poor sales of her recently released album Bitch.
The Grammy-winning artist shared that she had "all of these high hopes for what we would do the first week," especially after the project met its pre-save goal, after which it dropped, "and I was like, 'Oh, OK, this isn't what I kind of thought it would kind of be.'"
According to music data company Luminate, the album sold approximately 2,649 pure copies during its first week of release (about 5,000 equivalent album units). By the second week, sales dropped to just 650 units. The album failed to chart on the Billboard 200 at all — the first time a Lizzo project hasn't charted since her 2015 release, Big Grrrl Small World.
In the same conversation, the 38-year-old expressed gratitude for her close friend and fellow musician, SZA, who was there for her during this unexpected turn of events. She also acknowledged that the music industry is different than it was three years ago, but she still believes fans will come to appreciate the new album over time, calling the music on Bitch some of her best work.
At present, Lizzo has only one show on her summer schedule: July 7 at the Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia.
