Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, affecting nearly 1% of all births, or about 40,000 babies in the United States each year. Although many heart defects can be treated with surgery, most people are not completely cured and require lifelong medical care. One of the most severe forms is Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), which accounts for 2-3% of all congenital heart defects.
