Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (VAR) revealed that it has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for a new high-definition multileaf collimator, an ultra-fine beam shaping device for radiosurgery.
The company said that apart from helping clinicians to deliver extremely precise radiosurgical treatments, the new HD120 MLC multileaf collimator also includes intensity-modulated radiosurgery, and will be included with the new Novalis Tx radiosurgery system that Varian is teaming up with BrainLab to offer.
The company noted that a multileaf collimator is a device with many computer-controlled mechanical "leaves" or "slats" that continually shape the treatment beam as the radiation is delivered from different angles around the patient.
In a separate pres release, Varian Medical Systems stated that it has teamed up with BrainLAB to create Novalis Tx, integrating radiosurgery technologies from both companies for imaging, treatment planning, and treatment delivery.
The Novalis Tx provides a non-invasive alternative to conventional surgery for a wide spectrum of conditions, including benign and malignant tumors, metastatic cancer, and neurological conditions.
