Iraqi police have arrested the top al-Qaida in Iraq leader in the northern city of Mosul, where a major sweep on the terror network to root out its fighters in on, Interior Ministry said on Monday.
According to Maj. Gen. Ahmed Taha, Abdul-Khaliq al-Sabawi, the al-Qaida "wali" of Mosul, was arrested Monday in Salahuddin province neighboring Mosul's Nineveh province to the south.
The al-Qaida in Iraq uses "Wali", an Arabic word meaning "governor" to refer to its regional leaders.
U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces have been carrying out an intensified crackdown of Mosul and nearby regions.
