California-based engineering company URS Corp. (URS) Thursday revealed that the U.S. Department of Energy has granted a contract to manage the remediation of its radioactive and hazardous underground waste tanks at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. The $7.1 billion contract covers a five-year base performance period and an additional five-year option.
URS' Washington Division and EnergySolutions, together with dedicated subcontractor AREVA, have created a new company named Washington River Protection Solutions LLC. This company will be engaged in retrieving, treating, storing and disposing of the tank farm waste of Hanford and closing single shell tanks. At the Hanford Site, about 53 million gallons of highly radioactive and hazardous waste is stored in 177 underground tanks.
Tom Zarges, President of URS' Washington Division, commented, "URS and all of our team partners have a long history of supporting the DOE in environmental management and nuclear operations, including many successful projects both past and present at the Hanford Site."
URS closed Thursday's trading at $45.89, down $0.48 or 1.04%, on a volume of 458 thousand shares. In after-hours, the stock gained $0.20 or 0.43% to trade at $46.0851.
