Italian government on Friday declared a 'state of emergency, at the archaeological site of the ancient of Pompeii in a desperate attempt to restore and preserve the architecture and artifacts there from decay.
The Italian cabinet said in a statement that it would appoint a special commissioner for Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The statement said that the 'state of emergency' would last for over a year and added that extra funds would be allotted and other stern measures would be taken to restore the ancient city ruins.
The ruins are one of Italy's biggest tourist attractions and it attracts some 2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii each year. The government action comes after repeated complaints by archeologists and historians about the poor conditions of the ruins, caused by decades of neglect.
