Four Killed, Scores Injured In Serial Blasts In Northeastern India

At least four people were killed and scores of others injured after a series of bomb blasts rocked the town of Agartala in India's northeastern state of Tripura on Wednesday, said officials.

Officials said that at least four explosions rocked the major shopping arcades in Agartala, the capital of Tripura state, while the fifth went off at an inter-city bus station. They added that no one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

According to the police, the blasts occurred at the city's main shopping areas of Maharaja Ganju Bazar, Gobind Ballah Pant market, busy Radhanagar bus stand, Agartala Motorstand and Abhay Nagar localities.

Deputy inspector general of police Nepal Das told reporters that most of the victims were those who were shopping on the eve of Eid-al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

He said that at least two of the blasts were caused by high intensity bombs and added that at least ten of the injured were in critical condition.

Police officials said that the state was on alert for possible attacks ahead of the Hindu festival of Durga Puja that begins Saturday and added that they suspected Islamic militant groups, based in neighboring Bangladesh, to be behind the blasts.

Recently, various Indian cities have been hit by a wave of bomb attacks, killing more than 125 people. This is the second one in the week after bombs exploded in western Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra on Monday night, killing four people and wounding several others.
