Iraqi militant sentenced to death for killing U.S. soldiers

Tuesday, an Iraqi court sentenced to death by hanging a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq fighter for his involvement in the killing of three US soldiers south of Baghdad two years ago.

Chief judge, Munther Raouf Haadi found Ibrahim al-Qaraghuli guilty of attacking three soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division at an isolated checkpoint near the Euphrates river on June 16, 2006.

David J. Babineau of Springfield, Mass., was found dead at the checkpoint, while the mutilated bodies of other two soldiers were found at a nearby power station few days later.

Walid al-Kartani and Kazim al-Zubaie were also accused of committing one of the most cold-blooded attacks against American forces since the war in Iraq began.

However, the court in eastern Baghdad could not find sufficient evidence to declare them guilty.
