Major Child Porn Ring Busted In Austria

Police authorities in Austria said Friday that they have busted a major child porn ring involving nearly 1,000 people in over 170 countries.

Austrian police said in a statement that the crack down on the child porn ring was assisted by police in Croatia, where a site showing naked images of under-aged children from the U.S. and Paraguay was registered.

Nearly 190 suspects have been arrested in the crackdown, which came after a year-long investigation into the racket, the statement said, adding that some 14,000 computers, drives and disks were confiscated in the operation.

Police had identified a total of 935 suspects as part of the investigation, which was code-named Operation Sledgehammer. Those arrested were charged with downloading and dealing in child pornography, while 600 others who looked at the site without downloading images have been cleared, the statement added.
