A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has struck the ocean between the Philippines and eastern Indonesia on Monday evening, said the U.S. Geological Survey.
The agency said that the epicenter of the quake was located 296km south-southeast of General Santos in the Philippines, adding that it struck at a depth of 35kms below sea level near the Talaud islands between Sulawesi and the southern Philippines.
The quake struck by at 10.15pm on Monday and it was followed 10 minutes later by an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.0, officials said.
The quake rocked eastern parts of Indonesia, officials said, adding that there were no immediate reports of injury or damages in Monday's quake and its aftershock.
Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesian archipelago as it is located on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," where several tectonic plates collide.
