Myanmar's Suu Kyi In Better Health

Myanmar's opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is reported to be in better health after receiving medical attention but her personal doctor remains in detention, her political party, the National League for Democracy said.

The pro-democracy leader was placed on an intravenous drip Monday again by her doctor's assistant and can now eat, while her blood pressure has returned to normal, said a spokesman for her party. He said the 63-year-old was suffering from leg cramps and would benefit from a full check-up by her personal doctor Tin Myo Win, who was detained by police Thursday on unspecified charges.

Tin Myo Win was arrested a day after Myanmar authorities arrested an American man for allegedly sneaking into her closely guarded home early last week.

State-run media said the American confessed that he swam two kilometers across Inya Lake to Suu Kyi's compound and "secretly entered the house," where he stayed for two days. He was arrested when authorities spotted him swimming back.

Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest and has spent more than 13 of the last 19 years in detention, is rarely allowed to leave her compound and her visitors are severely restricted.
