Sony Corp. (SNE,SON.L) has appointed Kazuo Hirai as president and chief executive, with effect from April 1, 2012, replacing Howard Stringer. Stringer, who would become Chairman of the board in June, 2012, has recommended to the board that Hirai, currently Executive Deputy President, be his successor as President and CEO.
Meanwhile, Stringer would continue as Chairman of Sony Corp. until his ascension to the Board Chairmanship, which would be effective upon board approval following the annual meeting of shareholders in June, when the current Chairman, Yotaro Kobayashi, would retire. Further, Hirai is expected to be named to the board at the June shareholders meeting.
