Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is recalling hard-cooked eggs and prepared foods that contain such eggs, due to fears of contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. The products were sold between January 23 and February 1, 2012.
The affected products sold in Wegmans prepared foods and deli departments include Hard-Cooked Eggs, Cobb Salad, Garden Salad, Baby Spinach Salad, Chef Salad, Egg Salad, Egg Salad Sub, Kosher Macaroni Salad and Kosher Pickled Eggs.
The recalled products applies to purchases made at Wegmans' Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Canandaigua, Newark, Geneva, Corning, Elmira, Geneseo, and Hornell stores.
Wegmans said that till date no confirmed cases of illness in connection with these products have been reported to its knowledge.
Wegmans said the recall follows a similar move by Minnesota-based Michael Foods Inc. that produces the cooked eggs at its Wakefield, Nebraska facility. A lab testing by Michael Foods revealed that some of the eggs within the recalled lot dates may have been contaminated with Listeria.
Initially, on January 26, Michael Foods had announced recall of three lot dates, which Wegmans said were not received by the company. As a precautionary measure, the recall was expanded on February 1 to include additional lot dates, one of which was received by Wegmans.
According to Michael Foods, the contamination was most likely due to a repair project that took place in its packaging room. Wegmans said the recalled products were most likely to have consumed, owing to a short shelf life.
Consuming food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weak immune systems. It can also cause serious complications for pregnant women, such as stillbirth.
Symptoms of listeriosis include, fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea.
