Ever since Michael Foods Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of three lots of hard-cooked egg products on January 26, 2012 due to potential listeria contamination, a number of its customers have recalled their salads and various prepared foods as they contain the hard-cooked eggs that are the subject of the recall.

Only three specific lots of Papetti's Brand hard-cooked egg products (lot code numbers 1362W, 1363W, 1364W) in brine sold in 10-pound and 25-pound containers to food service distributors and food manufacturers were recalled by Michael Foods on January 26. The recall was initiated after lab testing revealed that some of the eggs may have been contaminated with bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. The cooked eggs were produced at the company's Wakefield, Nebraska facility.

On February 1, Michael Foods expanded the recall to include lot codes of 1 LOT 1350W through 1 LOT 2025W with other brand names - Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Silverbrook, and Wholesome Farms.

The recalled eggs were purchased by food distributors and manufacturers located in 34 states namely, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

A day after Michael Foods initial alert to its customers of the recall of three lots of hard-cooked egg products - on January 27, 18th Street Deli Inc., a Michigan firm, recalled about 118 pounds of julienne salad products with turkey, ham and hard-boiled eggs, as the salads contained eggs that are the subject of the recall due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

On February 2, Greencore USA, a Ohio firm, recalled roughly 23 pounds of chef salad products as they contained eggs that are the subject of the recall due to listeria contamination. A day later, the company recalled approximately 550 pounds of egg salad sandwiches with brand Name Quick Café and Take Away Café as the sandwiches contained eggs supplied by Michael Foods.

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. recalled various prepared foods that contained hard-cooked eggs produced by Michael Foods on February 2. The recall affects purchases made at Wegmans' Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Canandaigua, Newark, Geneva, Corning, Elmira, Geneseo, and Hornell stores.

On February 3, Allison's Gourmet Kitchens of Moore, Oklahoma, announced it is recalling certain prepared salads that contain cooked eggs because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The same day - on February 3, New Jersey firm F&S Produce Co. Inc. announced it is recalling about 389 pounds of Cobb and spinach salads as the salads contained eggs that are supplied by Michael Foods.

Yet another firm - GH Foods CA, LLC of California, announced it is recalling prepared sandwiches that contain hard-cooked eggs produced by Michael Foods on February 3. GH Foods SW, a Texas firm, also recalled approximately 515 pounds of Cobb salad products because of the same concern that day.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which can be serious and sometimes fatal in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
