(RTTNews) - Overall shop price inflation in the United Kingdom declined in January to 1.4 percent from 1.7 percent in December, the British Retail Consortium said Wednesday.
BRC said food inflation declined in January to 3.7 percent from 4.2 percent in December.
Non-food inflation fell to zero from 0.3 percent in December.
"With the impact of the 2011 VAT rise finally gone from annual comparisons these figures show how retailers are holding down prices for customers despite a range of upward pressures," said BRC Director General Stephen Robertson. "Even though retailers are facing higher transport and property costs, overall non-food prices are exactly the same as a year ago."
