Moscow may suspend temporarily the adoption of Russian children by U.S. citizens in order to introduce some stricter laws for the process, said a report on Saturday by Xinhua quoting the Russian Foreign Ministry.
This follows several cases of ill treatment of these children by their adoptive parents. Russia is one of the biggest providers of children to the U.S. for adoption.
The adoptions are to be suspended until the Russian-U.S. adoption deal comes into force. The agreement, signed on July 13, 2011, allows Russian monitors to visit homes of adopted children in the U.S. and includes measures such as psychological testing for the adoptive parents. The agreement is yet to be ratified by Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.
