Iceland Unemployment Rate Drops In January

Iceland's unemployment rate decreased from the previous month in January, data released by the Directorate of Labor showed Tuesday.

The unemployment rate declined to 7.2 percent in January from 7.3 percent in December. The latest figure was far below 8.5 percent recorded in January 2011.

On average, there were 11,452 jobless persons in Iceland in January, down from 11,760 in December. The number of unemployed at the end of January was 12,080, lower than 12,679 recorded in the previous month.

Long term unemployment, which refers to persons unemployed for one year and above, dropped to 3,695 at the end of January from 4,526 in December.
