Senator John McCain has called on the U.S. to lead airstrikes on Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces in Syria.

In a Senate floor speech on Monday afternoon, the Arizona Senator explained that "the United States should lead an international effort to protect key population centers in Syria, especially in the north, through airstrikes on Assad's forces."

He added that, despite questions of the efficacy of military options in Syria and concerns about their risks and uncertainties, "the ultimate goal of airstrikes should be to establish and defend safe havens in Syria, especially in the north, in which opposition forces can organize and plan their political and military activities against Assad."

The Syrian conflict — calling for the departure of Assad from power - started last March, with the government crackdown on dissent and attacks on opposition-heavy areas leading to over 7,500 deaths, according to the U.N.
