Katharine McPhee will cover Florence And The Machine's "Shake It Out" on the March 12 episode of Smash.
The American Idol star, who plays Karen, a struggling Broadway actress, decides to sing the song at a bar mitzvah performance she has scheduled to earn some extra cash. In the episode, Karen contemplates her career, with the song helping her reach a revelation.
McPhee explained how she and the show's producers arrived at the choice of song, telling AOL Music:
"We went through a bunch of songs and when I heard this last year, I knew we had to do it . . . we had heard the song and thought this would be amazing especially in this setting."
"When I was told I was going to sing with a bar mitzvah band, I thought, 'What could we do?' Of course everyone thought it should be an old standard but the label and I put our heads together to think what might be very cool and also fun," she added.
