Stair related injuries to children are another reason for parents to worry. A study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy found that from 1998 to 2008, 932,000 kids under the age of the five were sent to the emergency room for stair related incidents.
That amounts to nearly 100,000 kids per year, or one child every six minutes.
"What that tells us is that we have much more that we need to do to make the home environment safer for children," study author Dr. Gary A. Smith told The New York Times. "Children under 5 spend most of their time in the home, and even the best parent in the world can't watch their child 100 percent of the time."
He added that the actual number might be higher as all cases may not be reported in a reliable manner.
